Mandela Making Progress

(Reuters) - South African former President Nelson Mandela is in good spirits and making progress, doctors said on Friday, after the 94-year-old anti-apartheid hero was taken to hospital for the third time in four months for a lung infection. The medical report was a relief to South Africans who had been anxiously praying and waiting for an update on the health of the Nobel Peace Prize laureate, hospitalized before midnight on Wednesday. Global leaders sent their best wishes. President Jacob Zuma's government had already reported Mandela was responding well to treatment, and Zuma had sought to reassure the nation, recalling that the revered statesman's advanced age meant he required frequent medical checks. "President Nelson Mandela is in good spirits and enjoyed a full breakfast this morning," Zuma's office said in a statement. "The doctors report that he is making steady progress. He remains under treatment and observation in hospital," it added.

Mystery Of The Shroud Of Turin

Culled From Wikipedia Giulio Fanti and his research team conducted a shroud testing at the University of Padua and reported the results of some chemical and mechanical tests they performed which they claim "confirms that the Shroud dates back to the 1st century." The shroud of Turin or Turin Shroud is a linen cloth bearing the image of a man who appears to have suffered physical trauma in a manner consistent with crucifixion. It is kept in the royal chapel of the Cathedral of Saint John the Baptist in Turin, northern Italy. The image on the shroud is commonly associated with Jesus, his crucifixion and burial. It is much clearer in black-and-white negative than in its natural sepia color. The negative image was first observed in 1898, on the reverse photographic plate of amateur photographer Secondo Pia, who was allowed to photograph it while it was being exhibited in the Turin Cathedral. The origins of the shroud and its image are the subject of intense debate among scientists, theologians, historians and researchers. Scientific and popular publications have presented diverse arguments for both authenticity and possible methods of forgery. A variety of scientific theories regarding the shroud have since been proposed, based on disciplines ranging from chemistry to biology and medical forensics to optical image analysis. The Catholic Church has neither formally endorsed nor rejected the shroud, but in 1958 Pope Pius XII approved of the image in association with the Roman Catholic devotion to the Holy Face of Jesus. In 1978, a detailed examination was carried out by a team of American scientists called STURP. STURP found no reliable evidence of forgery, and called the question of how the image was formed "a mystery". In 1988 a radiocarbon dating test was performed on small samples of the shroud. The laboratories at the University of Oxford, the University of Arizona, and the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology, concurred that the samples they tested dated from the Middle Ages, between 1260 and 1390. In 2008 a former STURP member stated that sample was representative of the whole shroud. Since 2005, at least four articles have been published in scholarly sources stating that the samples used for the dating test may not have been representative of the whole Shroud. According to former Nature editor Philip Ball, "it's fair to say that, despite the seemingly definitive tests in 1988, the status of the Shroud of Turin is murkier than ever. Not least, the nature of the image and how it was fixed on the cloth remain deeply puzzling". The shroud continues to remain one of the most studied and controversial artifacts in human history.

Oscar Pistorious Free To Travel Abroad After Challenging Bail Terms

courtesy: Bellanaija BBC reports that Pistorius sought an end to supervision by a probation officer and compulsory drug and alcohol testing but the state opposed the application. However, he was granted permission to travel as long as he complied with certain conditions and could also visit his hometown Pretoria, where his girlfriend Reeva Steenkamp was killed. “It is not as if the appellant is travelling for holiday in Mauritius; it’s only to gain an income, there’s no other reason,” Pistorious's lawyer Barry Roux was quoted as saying.

Nelson Mandela Back in Hospital With Lung Infection

JOHANNESBURG – Former President Nelson Mandela of South Africa was readmitted to the hospital overnight because of a recurring lung infection, President Jacob Zuma said in a statement on Thursday, appealing to people around the world to pray for him. Mr. Mandela has struggled with lung problems since he contracted tuberculosis during his 27 years in prison in the apartheid era, when his incarceration became a potent symbol in South Africa and around the world of the struggle to throw off a codified system of racial domination devised by the country’s white rulers. May God grant our good leader rest.

POOR NIKE

I never heard of this until i read her story. In Nike Oshinowo's own words: "I have lived with Endometriosis since the age of 13. I went to boarding school in England when I was 7. I went to prep school. It was during the first few days in secondary school that I began my periods. They called the ambulance and I was hospitalized for 10 days because the pain wouldn't stop. The pain was so intense I passed out. I thought I was going to die. Living with Endometriosis is a challenge. When you see your doctor, your doctor tries to treat the symptoms and assumes the pain revolves around your menstrual circle. But this is not so. The pain affects every single aspect of your life. I have never had an examination without my period. There are so many things I have never done without my period. When I am happy, my period comes. When I'm depressed, my period is there. I learned to just cope with it. Looking fabulous by the way!

THERE WAS A WRITER

Prof. Chinua Achebe, widely known for his highly influential debut novel Thing's Fall Apart, is not dead. The man whose birth in Ogidi, Anambra State, on November 16 1930, was unceremonious and random, became the most celebrated African literary icon when he wrote the powerful story of Okonkwo; a proud and courageous man, depicting the ills of colonization and the travesty of a society. He moved away from his family to Nekede, four kilometres from Owerri, the capital of Imo State, at the age of 12 and registered at the Central School there. He attended Government College Umuahia for his secondary school education. He was a pioneer student of the University College, now University of Ibadan in 1948. He was first admitted to study medicine but changed to English, history and theology after his first year. While studying at Ibadan, Achebe began to become critical of European literature about Africa. It was then he conceived the idea of a novel and Okonkwo was born. Brown University, where he worked until his demise, described Achebe as “known the world over for having played a seminal role in the founding and development of African literature.” He made headlines in September of 2012 when he turned down a $1million offer from rapper 5o Cent for permission to use the Things Fall Apart title for an upcoming movie. This great man is really not dead even though he has given up the ghost after a prolonged illness. His spirit, through his books, forever lives on!

Plot Against US Embassies in Nigeria Unravelled!

A man who prosecutors said was an overseas operative of Al Qaeda during the years following the Sept. 11 attacks was charged in Brooklyn with a host of terrorism charges, in the latest example of a foreigner accused of acts of terrorism abroad being extradited to American courts. The man, Ibrahim Suleiman Adnan Adam Harun, who was from Saudi Arabia and a citizen of Niger, traveled to Afghanistan shortly before the attacks and stayed there afterward, training in Qaeda terrorist camps and then fighting American and coalition forces during the early years of the Afghan war, prosecutors said. Mr. Harun, 43, is accused of traveling to Nigeria next to plot attacks against American diplomatic facilities in that country.
The charges include conspiring to murder American citizens, conspiring to bomb United States government facilities and providing material support to Al Qaeda. Court papers do not indicate whether he took steps to carry out attacks. Mr. Harun, who is known by the Pashto pseudonym Spin Ghul, or White Rose, faces a maximum sentence of life in prison. He is scheduled to make his first appearance in Federal District Court in Brooklyn on Friday. A lawyer for Mr. Harun, David Stern, declined to comment. Mr. Harun landed on American soil in October after first being detained by two other countries. He was arrested in Libya in 2005 and held there until his release in summer 2011, when the Libyan government was crumbling. According to his own account, cited in court records, Libyans placed him on a refugee ship bound for Italy. Mr. Harun said he was arrested by Italian law enforcement and imprisoned in that country after proclaiming his affiliation with Al Qaeda and assaulting Italian officers on the ship. American law enforcement officials interviewed Mr. Harun in September 2011 while he was in Italian custody. Prosecutors said he waived his Miranda rights. In a motion that was unsealed on Wednesday, prosecutors said that starting more than a decade ago, Mr. Harun was in direct contact with prominent Qaeda leaders, trainers and fighters. While in Africa, the defendant was also in contact with members of other extremist groups that were either affiliated with Al Qaeda or otherwise targeted Westerners. A grand jury indicted Mr. Harun in February and the case remained under seal until Wednesday. Prosecutors said they kept the case secret to pursue information provided by Mr. Harun. “Whether they try to attack our servicemen on the battlefield or scheme to kill our diplomats and citizens in embassies abroad, terrorists will find no refuge,” Loretta E. Lynch, the United States attorney for the Eastern District of New York, said in a statement. The case of Mr. Harun follows several others in New York federal courts involving defendants who were apprehended abroad and extradited to the United States. In December, three men of Somali descent — two were Swedish citizens and one a British citizen — appeared in Federal District Court in Brooklyn on charges that they had trained to be suicide bombers with a Somali terrorist group, Al Shabab. In June, an Eritrean man pleaded guilty in Federal District Court in Manhattan to conspiring to support Al Shabab. Source: The New York Times.

FG Restores DANA AIR'S License after two day's suspension

Just two days after the Federal Government suspended the Air Operators Certificate of Dana Air grounding all flight operations, its license has again been restored.

In a statement signed by the Special Adviser (Media) to the Minister of Aviation, Joe Obi, he said that officials of the Ministry and those of the Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) met with officials of the airline and deliberated on safety issues and Dana’s operations.
According to the statement, one of Dana’s aircraft had a snag which led to the temporary suspension for safety reasons.
“At the end of the meeting, the suspension of operations of the airline which took effect last Saturday was lifted. The airline is to resume normal operations immediately. However, the particular aircraft which had a snag over the weekend is to remain grounded until after its airworthiness has been re-certified by Boeing, the manufacturer of the aircraft,” ThisDay quotes him as saying.
Dana Air, in an email sent to its customers signed by the Head, Corporate Communications, Dana Air, Tony Usidamen yesterday said scheduled flights would now commence.
“We are pleased to announce that the airline has been given approval to resume flight operations with immediate effect following the temporary suspension of our operations on Saturday.
“Scheduled flights will now commence on Tuesday, March 19, on the Lagos-Abuja-Lagos route,” it stated
